Geneva 2020 Delivers Community Report

Geneva 2020

Geneva 2020 issued a Community Report at a breakfast Thursday morning. Geneva 2020 is a coalition of local businesses, nonprofits and individuals working to support city schools. It was formed in 2011 when Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark Gearan gathered a group to address challenges facing the district, which was under a New York State watch. At that time as many as one in four students were not graduating. Superintendent Trina Newton said that significant progress has been made toward a goal of 90 percent, with much work yet to be done.

“We're at 84.9%. The next five percent is going to be a heavy lift and it's going to take all of us.”

Going forward, Geneva 2020 intends to build on its work by reaching further into the community. Action teams will address issues across all grade levels including Kindergarten Readiness, Literacy, and College and Career Readiness.

Kelly Walker started his public radio career at WBAA in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1985 and has spent some time in just about every role public broadcasting has to offer. He has spent substantive time in programming and development at KWMU in St. Louis, WFIU in Bloomington, Indiana, and Troy Public Radio in Alabama before his arrival in Geneva, New York. In addition, his work has been heard on many other public radio stations as well as NPR. Kelly also produces The Sundilla Radio Hour, which airs Sundays at 1 p.m. on Finger Lakes Public Radio and is distributed to public radio stations all over the country through PRX.
