Geneva was the site of a Families Belong Together rally Saturday morning.

By 10 a.m., it was already very hot, but that didn’t stop a crowd of hundreds from gathering in the field next to the newly reopened New York State Finger Lakes Welcome Center. They chanted, and held signs and listened to speakers from local groups working to assistant immigrants including Emily Wayne, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes.

“Regardless of your faith affiliation, regardless of your political affiliation, what we have witnessed is a crisis of humanity and today we’ve come together to reclaim our moral compass.”

The rally was to show support for families currently separated by the zero-tolerance policy of the Trump administration, but also to immigrants of all kinds living and working in the United States. Some told their own stories, in some cases with the assistance of translators.

“Enough of separating families and so much pain. Enough of so many lies that are told about us. We are not criminals. We are not rapists. We are not animals.”

Saturday’s rally was one of hundreds held across the country including an anchor rally in Washington DC across from the White House.
