Tops to temporarily offer single-use plastic bags

Tops Friendly Markets will again be offering customers single-use plastic bags.

This change happens after New York state delayed enforcement of the ban on the plastic bags until May 15. That delay is also related to a legal challenge against the plastic bag legislation.

Tops officials say they are temporarily not enforcing the ban in order to help with sanitation concerns surrounding reusable bags and COVID-19.

Customers who bring in reusable bags to Tops will be asked to pack their own groceries, otherwise they have the option of having the cashier pack them in a paper or plastic bag.

Wegmans officials say at this point, that supermarket company does not plan to reintroduce plastic bags at its stores in New York state. The company says it continues to monitor the situation with guidance from state officials.
