Tops details layoffs pending due to some store closings

There is more information about layoffs facing some Tops supermarket employees in the wake of the decision to close 10 stores in New York State.

A notice posted on the State Labor Department website, shows that 277 workers are facing layoffs at stores on Lake Avenue and North Winton Road in Rochester, Pittsford/Palmyra Road in Fairport, and Pyramid Mall in Geneva.

There is no indication yet how many employees might be affected at a Tops store which is closing in Lyons.

There are also a total of 148 workers impacted by Tops store closings in Syracuse and Elmira.

The workers are expected to be laid off by the end of November. But a statement from Tops says it does have many opening across its chain of stores, and to the extent possible, it is continuing to work with those affected to try and find them jobs at nearby store locations.

Tops announced last month it is closing10 stores it says are underperforming as part of its effort to restructure and emerge from the Chapter 11 bankruptcy it filed for earlier this year.
