Those plans are offered through a program called New York State of Health, which offers health coverage for New Yorkers who don’t get insurance through their work or through Medicare.

In a statement, the department said part of the reason for increased enrollment is that it’s streamlined the signup process.

New Yorkers have until Dec. 15 to enroll in a plan that starts coverage Jan. 1.

The health department is holdingtwo informational sessionsin Rochester before the deadline to answer questions about enrolling in plans through the state’s marketplace.
